Temporary Library Assistant (part-time)

The Bethlehem Area Public Library has several openings for Temporary Library Assistants for summer 2025. Each position is listed below. Pay is $10 per hour. PA Child Abuse, PA Criminal, and FBI Fingerprint clearances are required. Full job description is attached. 24 hours per week at our South Side Branch (400 Webster St. Bethlehem, PA) 25 hours per week in the Youth Services Department at our Main library (11 W. POSITION

Title: Temporary Library Assistant
Location: Main, South Side, and/or Coolidge
Department: Circulation, Youth Services, and/or South Side
Supervisor: Head of Circulation, Head of Youth Services, Branch Manager, and/or Head of Outreach

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Ability to work cooperatively and tactfully with patrons and staff
  2. Flexibility
  3. Ability to handle the physical requirements of the job (lifting, bending, reaching, stooping, standing)
  4. Ability to make efficient use of time
  5. Must maintain a professional appearance on the job
  6. Must be at least 16 years of age

JOB SUMMARY

A Temporary Library Assistant is responsible for returning library material to its proper shelf location, inspecting materials for damage and cleaning as needed before shelving, monitoring new books, and assisting with various tasks of the library.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Shelving library materials
  2. Checking library materials in and out
  3. Keeping shelves in orderly condition and shelf-reading for accuracy of items on the shelf
  4. Being alert to notice items that may have damage or missing pieces upon return, then informing proper Circulation staff member of that condition
  5. Assisting patrons
  6. Rotating new books on and off the new book shelf and rotating seasonal books from storage
  7. Creating displays of titles, as needed
  8. Researching craft and/or program component ideas
  9. Making craft samples and preparing pieces for projects/programs
  10. Occasionally assisting program presenters
  11. Assisting with changing status of materials in database, as needed
  12. Other duties, as assigned

Branch Youth Services Technician (part-time)

The Bethlehem Area Public Library has an opening for a part-time Branch Youth Services Technician at our South Side Branch (400 Webster St., Bethlehem, PA 18015). The position is 29 hours per week and includes one evening per week and every other Saturday. Starting pay is $20 per hour. PA criminal, FBI fingerprint, and PA child abuse clearances are required. QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree, or 2-year library technical certificate, or equivalent, plus 2 years of experience serving children

  • Ability to work well with the public, especially children

  • Reference skills, with proficiency in internet and online database searching

  • Proficiency with the use of computers

  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively with others in person, by telephone, and via email

  • Ability to plan and execute children’s programs

  • Ability to assist at the Circulation desk as needed

The Branch Youth Services Technician is responsible for story times and other children’s programs, assists with outreach to children, and performs general library tasks.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans and prepares children’s story times and other programs

  • Conducts story times and other children’s programs

  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory assistance to patrons

  • Assists the Branch Manager with community outreach activities

  • Performs general duties at the Circulation desk

  • Processes new children’s materials

  • Assists the Branch Manager with Youth Services collection management, specifically suggesting titles for purchase

  • Other duties, as assigned
