I got my first library card when I was just four years old…

As soon I was old enough to print my name on the form, I made my mom take me to the library. We lived just down the road from the South Side Branch and I couldn’t wait to go. My older brother already had his card and I was so jealous. He loved to read—his first word was book! He was part of the summer program (“Reading is Fun!”) and I couldn’t believe he got prizes just for reading.

I carefully printed my name on the form, thankful I didn’t have to do my whole long last name. Writing my first name was hard enough for a four year-old! The librarian prepared the card, and from the moment Mrs. Helms handed it to me, the library became a lifelong companion.

Now, 70 years later, I still use the Bethlehem Area Public Library. It’s been a constant source of joy, learning, and comfort throughout my life. The library has given me so much over the years, and I can’t imagine a world without it. Please consider supporting BAPL during this year’s appeal to ensure it remains a treasured resource for future generations, just like it has been for me.

Give now before the end of the year!
