What is it to make a new home, for whatever reason you find yourself wanting and/or needing to do so? Are you a recent arrival to the area for work-related reasons? Did you have to leave your former home? Did something change with the people who made your former home, home? Are you caught up in personal or political turmoil or a new adventure of choice? Through free writing workshops, we will explore these questions and more.
The project, under the wing of Touchstone Theatre, will be facilitated by writer Jan Cohen-Cruz, who has published six books and is an instructor in Touchstone’s Performance Creation MFA through Moravian University. At each session, Jan will offer the group one or two prompts. We will write 15 to 20 minutes in response to each, and then read our pieces to each other. Discussion will be in the spirit of affirming what especially strikes us. Depending on the group’s interests, we will explore making theatrical scenes or visual art from the stories. The project will culminate with participation in Touchstone Theatre’s Festival Unbound late September/ early October 2022—perhaps sharing stories or art work or even food that gives us a sense of home as well as offering a participatory workshop.
Jan hopes people will participate regularly in the writing workshops, which will take place every Saturday morning, other than holiday weekends, from April through October. She is keen on bringing a range of people together with diverse perspectives and experiences related to the subject. We also welcome people who simply love to write and want to do so in a collective setting.
The Bethlehem Area Public Library is enthusiastically co-hosting the workshop along with the Refugee Community Center at the Episcopal Church of the Mediator in Allentown.
The workshop will begin April 2nd at the Bethlehem Area Public Library (BAPL). Ideally the location will alternate between the library and the Refugee Community Center (RCC), from 10am til noon, on these dates:
BAPL: April 2, 23; May 7, 21; June 11, 25; July 16, 30; Aug 13, 27; Sept 17.
RCC: April 9, 30; May 14; June 4,18; July 9, 23; Aug 6, 20; Sept 10, 24.
