plazaBAPLx350Ahhh, bittersweet Labor Day. The “yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country”  (US Dept. of Labor). A time to relax and enjoy the unofficial end of summer. Even though the Library is closed this weekend- Saturday and Monday, you can still download eBooks, digital magazines, or access our online resources. Enjoy the long weekend!

Zumba keeps mind and body fit!

zumbawebExercise programs such as Zumba improve both physical and mental health!  Popular Zumba classes use dance to burn calories at the South Side Branch every Thursday at 6:30 pm through October 29. Dance easy-to-follow moves to salsa, merengue, reggae and hip hop tunes. The one hour classes are for children, teens and adults. Register here

Heroes versus Villains!

heroes_smEverybody loves a hero, but sometimes pretending to be a bad guy is fun, too! Dress as your favorite hero or villain and come to Heroes vs. Villains Night for exciting games and refreshments at the South Side Branch tonight at 6:30 p.m. You can make a mask and cape at the program if you don’t have a costume. The  Friends of the Library is sponsoring this free event! More here

Eyes of the WILD….

eyeswild15bitSee nature’s unusual heroes up close at Eyes of the Wild, an educational and entertaining program featuring live reptiles and animals. Registration is not required for the first program at the Main Library on Tuesday, July 21. A second performance at the South Side Branch on Thursday, July 23 does require registration. The one hour program begins at 6:30PM at both locations. Sponsored by Friends of the Library. Details

The event is part of the Library’s summer reading program Every Hero Has a Story. It’s not too late to join and earn prizes for time spent reading this summer!

The Amazing McDonnell

Tom McDonnell, the favorite magician at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia, amazes all ages with his illusions. He will perform at the Main Library on Tuesday, June 30. Details

A second show is scheduled for the South Side Branch on Thursday, July 2. Both one-hour shows are at 6:30 p.m. Both are FREE, and registration is required at the South Side Branch only. Register for the Branch performance here.

Superhero Art Workshop

AnimeCome to the South Side Branch for a free Superhero Art Workshop on Tuesday, June 16. Professional cartoonist Cotty Kilbanks will demonstrate techniques. All the materials will be provided. She will present the same workshop at the Main Library on Monday, June 22. Both one-hour workshops are at 6:30 p.m. and require registration. Register for Branch program here. TEENS: Dress as your favorite hero or villain from comic books, pop culture or literature for a Heroes and Villains celebration at the Main Library on Wednesday, June 17 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. A trivia game, costume contest and similar entertainment are planned. Grades 6-12. Details

Every Hero Has a Story!  Family Fun Nights, a superhero training camp, concerts, a magic show, a live animal show, science workshops, story times, puppet shows, and more are planned to engage and entertain the younger crowd at the Main Library and the South Side Branch throughout the summer. Children may also register on the Bookmobile.

Teens: join Unmask! and read for prizes, as well as take part in free, special events including a cartooning workshop, Teen Fear Factor, trivia games, a superhero costume contest, and a superhero movie night.

Escape the Ordinary is the theme of the Adult Summer Reading Program. Patrons are invited to try new genres this summer—exploring heroes, superheroes, and other extraordinary people, places, and events. Prizes for adults, too!

The contractor is beginning to fix the steps to the front door.  The steps have been ripped out and will then proceed to the next step.  You can still access the front door by using the ramp.  If at any time the public cannot use the front door due to safety issues, another message will appear on this blog.
