Normal access to the Branch has been restored! The new ramp is in place and temporary handrails have been installed. Men of Steel tonight!

Bethlehem Steel’s blast furnaces are silent, but the men who worked there remember what it was like to work at The Steel and grow up in south Bethlehem. Former steelworkers Lester Clore and Richie Check will speak about their experiences at the South Side Branch tonight from 6:30 to 7:45 PM. Lester Clore worked as a rigger for 33 years and is now a volunteer with the Steelworkers’ Archives Speakers Bureau. Richie Check also worked as a rigger for most of his 43 years at Bethlehem Steel. He and 11 of his relatives worked at The Steel and climbed the hill to their homes afterward. His story is like most of the steelworkers whose families moved from Europe to find work in Bethlehem’s biggest industry. Mr. Check is a founding member of the Steelworkers’ Archives Speakers Bureau.

The concrete has been poured! There is now new ramp and step access to the front doors and a freshly poured sidewalk. These additions are still inaccessible as the concrete cures and a temporary handrail is installed. This should be done by early next week. The final step will be to have a permanent handrail created and installed, which will take a few more weeks. Once done, access to the front doors of the Branch will be much improved. Check back here for updates!

Work on the Branch’s newest enhancement, the addition of a ramp to the main doors, has begun! During construction, the main doors will be inaccessible but the Branch will be open normal hours. Please plan on using the side door, closest to the book drop, when visiting. The construction should only last a few weeks, but be sure to check back here for updates.

toddlers at play pixIt’s never too early to make sure your child will be ready to learn when he or she begins kindergarten. Family Place at the South Side Branch connects parents of toddlers, ages 1-3, with early childhood professionals to insure their children are developing on track physically, emotionally and mentally. Children play with educational toys at Toddlers At Play,  and parents talk informally one-on-one with professionals from area agencies. Parenting resources will be available at the program. Circle time, music and art projects round out the Family Place experience. Siblings are also welcome to attend. The 5 week series begins on Wednesday, April 9 at 11:15 a.m. The free program continues on consecutive Wednesdays through May 7.
