dreamstime_xs_79705375If you are in grades 1-5, bring your parent to be your partner for amazing science-based activities and experiences on Saturday, February 25 the Main Library at 2pm.  This is a spin-off of the Franklin Institute’s program.  The one hour STEM workshop is free and open to the public. No registration. Made possible by a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services as administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education through the Office of Commonwealth Libraries.

Chi-Raq

Movlic_pressSpike Lee’s modern adaptation of a Greek play, Chi-Raq, will be shown and discussed on Saturday, February 25 at 12:30 pm at the Main Library. The film depicts a gang leader’s girlfriend who is horrified after a child is killed by a stray bullet. She leads a crusade to end the violence in Chicago’s South Side by getting women to take a vow of abstinence until there is peace in their neighborhoods. Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett, Teyonah Parris, Wesley Snipes, and Nick Cannon star in this movie (rated R for graphic language, nudity, and sexual content). A discussion on Black on Black crime and the power of women will follow the film viewing.

Celebrate the imagination of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter character on Come in costume, play Hogwarts games, make magical props, and try Bertie Botts beans. A Harry Potter photo booth will also be available. Prizes will be awarded for costumes and game winners. All ages.

The two hour program is free and open to the public. No registration.

Book & Cook: Author Visit

Author visitWhat would it be like to enter an intergalactic cooking competition? Author and Liberty High School graduate, Natalie Riess, answered that question with her popular graphic novel series, Space Battle Lunchtime.

She will visit the Main Library on Saturday, February 11 at 2:00 pm to talk about writing. Afterwards she will  judge the library’s version of Chopped, Jr. Contestants in grades 4 to 12 will create something edible, and hopefully delicious, with the ingredients provided. Prizes will be awarded.
