If the library doesn’t own a book that you want, and it is not suitable for purchase, we will attempt to borrow it from another library for you. You must be a resident of our direct service area (Bethlehem, Bethlehem Township, Fountain Hill, Hanover Township-Northampton County, Lower Saucon Township) or district (Nazareth, Northampton, Hellertown libraries) and have a current Bethlehem library card. If you have an Access card, we cannot do an interlibrary loan for you; you must go to your home library.
You may request interlibrary loans in person at the Information Desk, by phoning the Main Library at 610-867-3761, ext. 224 or the South Side Branch at 610-867-7852, or by filling in, printing out and returning the online Interlibrary Loan Request form.
We can also get photocopies of journal articles for you if they are not available in our library or online. Most libraries charge a fee for photocopying. When you place your request, please indicate the maximum amount that you are willing to pay for a copy of the article. Fill out the form online or call it in by phone, or come to the Information Desk.
We borrow print materials and audiobooks on interlibrary loan – no music or DVDs. We cannot borrow reference materials, current textbooks, or copies of whole journals. The lending library sets the due date for us and that due date is NOT affected by when you pick the item up. We can request one renewal for you, but there is no guarantee that the library that owns the book will grant the renewal.
The average turnaround time for an interlibrary loan is two weeks. You will be notified by mail or e-mail, whichever you prefer, when your item is ready for pickup. There is a $.50 handling charge when you pick it up, and an additional $1.00 charge if you do not pick it up. If request is canceled after item has shipped from supplying library, the $.50 charge will still apply.
